In a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2005 (93(2): 281-289), researchers followed a group of 113 overweight subjects after 4 weeks of a very low calorie diet, through a 6 month period of weight maintenance. The subjects were divided into a protein group or a control group. The protein group was simply given an extra 30 grams of protein per day on top of their usual diet.

The researchers found that the group with higher protein intake was less likely to regain the lost weight, and any weight gain was lean tissue and not fat. The result was due to the high thermic effect and decrease in appetite.

None of this is news to bodybuilders or bodybuilding style nutrition programs. Many bodybuilders increase protein intake as much as 30%-40% or ever higher before competitions. As you can see studies confirmed what bodybuilders have known for a long time.

A simple step you can take to burn fat. Simply replace some carbs with protein. You can replace 30 grams of carbs with 30 grams of lean protein per day. Notice how this small change in your diet would help you burn body fat, decrease your appetite and keep the fat off after you lose it.

Exercise 1
You will need a chair for this exercise. Place your hands on a chair, with your back towards the chair. Your legs should be at a medium distance away from the body and bent at knees. Slowly lower yourself; you will feel a pull in the upper area of the body. Push yourself up with the hands, back to the starting position. Repeat this action around 10 times to begin with. Once you get accustomed to the exercise routine, you can even keep your legs outstretched to increase the difficulty of the exercise.

Exercise 2
These push-ups help the chest, shoulders and arms. Face the ground by resting your weight on the hands and legs. Hands should be shoulder-width apart. Arms have to be fully extended and feet have to be together. The knees should not be touching the ground. The body should be at a straight angle. Lower the body slowly so that the nose reaches the ground. Use your arms to push the body back to the start position. If you face a lot of difficulty while trying these push-ups, you can begin by resting your weight on the knees. In that case, you have to cross the legs at the ankles when you begin with the exercise routine. Begin with 8 push-ups till you feel confident about increasing the number.

Exercise 3
Sit upright in a chair. Gently breathe out and suck your stomach in. Hold it for 2-3 seconds. Now, breathe in as you release the stomach. For effective results, do this around 8 times.

Exercise 4
Keep your hands at a shoulder-width distance and lean against the wall. Keep your feet together. The body should be straight. Lower the body till the nose touches the wall. Then come back to the starting position. Repeat these wall push-ups around 8 times.

Weight loss exercise programs for the lower body

Exercise 1
Stand with a straight back and feet hip-width apart. The toes should point straight towards the front. The arms should be outstretched in the front as this helps to maintain balance. Slowly lower your body so that the thighs are parallel to the floor. Remember to keep your back straight. Pause for a moment and then raise yourself back to the starting position. Do this exercise 10 times in your exercise routine.

Exercise 2
Stand straight with your legs apart. Keep your head up and torso erect. Extend one leg to the side. The feet and the toes should point straight. Bend the knee of the extended leg keeping the torso upright. Slowly raise yourself back to the starting position. Now, repeat this lunge with the other leg. Do this step 10 times with each leg.

Exercise 3
Sit on a chair and keep your feet together. Now, place a cushion between your knees and thighs. Squeeze it as hard as you can for 3-4 seconds and relax. Repeat this exercise around 5 times. You can then change the cushion to a semi-inflated football to increase the difficulty level of the exercise.

Stand straight and lift one leg slowly. Repeat with other leg. Begin this exercise with 10 steps for each leg. Then increase the count once you feel comfortable.

You can also follow this routine by playing a CD of your favorite music and grooving to the music with steps that will warm you up but are not jerky at the same time! Dancing will relieve your stress and increase your stamina as well.

There aren’t many things that people are happy about losing but when it comes to weight they would love to give it away. There are more diets, pills, potions, and surgeries to remedy the problem than we can count. Let’s look at the at the conventional ways available to lose weight.

The most common is a combination watching your intake in comparison to what your burn off. In other words you need to find the right combination of diet and exercise. The theory behind this should work except for two problems. The first is that people with good intentions start that gym membership and then slowly after a few weeks stop going. The second problem which I consider more monumental is the fact that you can only withhold eating too much for a certain amount of time. If you are hungry you are hungry and will soon give in to the cravings.

 Surgery is an option but it should be approached carefully and usually as a last resort. While it can offer the quick fix weight loss solution a person may want the necessary lifestyle changes still must be made to maintain what the desired weight. There are pills as well and for the most part I would be more wary of these than surgery. Many can contain stimulants which I personally would not want. Patients still need to watch what they eat in as they are told to stay away from the typical fatty foods.

So there are your options each vary in effectiveness and risk. The bottom line with any option is chosen is that a lifestyle change needs to be made. The problem is dramatic changes are hard so I suggest baby steps. Cut out one or two bad things and add one or two things.

 If you eat fast food a lot. Scale it down a little at first maybe even eat once or twice less a week. Now add something good. Add fruit or healthy nuts (not salted, etc) to your diet. Try and cut down sodas, or at least change to diet. Choose whole wheat breads. Go to the gym just half an hour twice a week to start. These things may sound small but it’s the baby steps that will get you started and I believe keep you on track longer.

A common practice for fasting participants after a fasting period is finished is to have a giant feast in celebration of a successful fasting period. You can throw a feast and enjoy yourself once, but you shouldn’t be feasting on all of the fatty foods and junk food that you enjoy for weeks and days after your fasting period is over. If you do that you will probably gain more weight then you lost.

To effectively lose weight and maintain your weight loss you need to cutback on your calorie intake and start exercising on a regular basis. If you "don’t have" time for exercise, cutting back on your calorie intake will be sufficient enough for you to lose a little bit of weight. But to truly burn calories you need to exercise three to five times a week.

If your not in shape at all and never exercise, a light 1-1.5 mile walk will help you burn lots of calories and decrease your weight over time. And because it will become easier over time it will be easier to do, so you will be able to do it for along time and keep your new weight. If you want to get into even better shape, you can do strength training exercise(lifting weights, push-ups, etc…) or you can add aerobics into your fitness routine.

If you want to know "are low carb diets bad" then read on. In fact there are some pretty nasty side effects of low carb diets. There is indeed a misunderstanding in the dieting scene that one must get rid of the carb-rich food group. The problem is you need to have these foods included in your diet as they are the major source of energy for your body.

Did you now that the Atkins type of diet is only good for temporary results and that much of the initial weight loss is simply water weight loss? Many on a low carb regime report blurred vision, depression or just "feeling weird". And to top it off these programs even have long-term risks.

One of these is a risk of osteoporosis. Diets which are very high in animal protein from meat increases the risk for osteoporosis in women. The body takes calcium from the bones to counteract the acids that build up in the blood as a result of digesting large quantities of protein.

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research any diet that is low in carbohydrates and also low in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, but high in animal protein, increases the risk of getting certain types of cancers.

With low carb diets you take in high amounts of fats. An international study shows that countries with a high rate of breast cancer, are countries that have high fat intake in there diet. While those with a low fat consumption have lower occurrences of breast cancer. Diets which are high in fiber are better for you and will help to gradually overcome the risks of breast cancer.

Most alarming, perhaps, is the risk of heart disease. Eating to much saturated fat is a known risk factor for raised LDL cholesterol, heart disease and stroke.
